Stockport is situated on the River Mersey, between the city of Manchester and the beautiful surroundings of the Peaks District and Cheshire. History is in abundance in this attractive town from the Industrial Revolution to the present day.
Once a major manufacturing area, Stockport was renowned for rope and silk manufacture and is still to this day, best known for the manufacture of hats and head wear, as on view at the Hat Works. With Home boroughs including Hazel Grove, Bramhall and Wilmslow, Stockport boasts a variation of venues in towns, suburbs and rural surroundings.
Dominating the horizon in the town is the Stockport Railway Viaduct, built in the 1800’s, transporting the Manchester to Birmingham and London railway lines, over 27 brick arches, still maintained and a major transport feature today. Stockport also has a large transport infrastructure with links to the surrounding areas by rail and the M60 and M56 motorway networks.
Today Stockport boasts a recently refurbished traditional market area, fantastic shopping facilities and visitor and tourist attractions in the suburbs and the surrounding countryside.
